Fall Workshop provides Content Direction for the California Water Safety Strategy
Last week, the California Water Safety Coalition Workgroups came together to discuss and decide upon a vision and content direction for the California Water Safety Strategy.
Over the course of a full day in Newport Beach, participants reviewed a multitude of recommendations from the National Water Safety Action Plan and specific actions generated by CWSC Workgroup members to determine what belongs in the California Strategy.
Having gone through hundreds of Post It notes and more than a few Sharpies, participants left the day with broad agreement on next steps and motivated to have a draft plan for review and release in Spring 2023.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this process, and to all those who will help strengthen the Strategy over the coming months!
Governor Newsom signs Childhood Drowning Data Collection Pilot Program into law
Last month, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 855 into law. The law, which the American Academy of Pediatrics California and California Alliance for YMCAs advocated for, will create a statewide childhood drowning data collection system through a three-year pilot program to be administered by the Department of Public Health (CDPH).
The program will collect detailed data on childhood drownings and near-drownings which result in significant health consequences, focusing on swimming pool incidents among children aged one through four years old. The data collected will help inform prospective public policies designed to decrease instances of childhood drownings.
Safer California Conference: November 15 & 16
The Safer California Conference is less than a month away and, good news, the lower registration price has been extended. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are engaged in or seeking to engage in child, teen, and youth injury prevention efforts.
The Conference aims to increase participants’ knowledge of the latest prevention advancements, offer an opportunity to exchange learnings and ideas, provide access to additional prevention resources.
The Safer CA goal is to help move California toward zero childhood and youth fatalities due to drowning, traffic collisions, poisoning, falls, burns, kids left in cars, suffocation, self-harm and more.
