Identifying opportunities for multisectoral action for drowning prevention: a scoping review

Authors: Scarr & Jagnoor; Published in Injury Prevention.

Drowning is a complex issue. Global, national and our own California coalition agendas call for greater emphasis on multisectoral action and engagement with sectors not yet involved in prevention efforts. This research explores the boundaries of drowning prevention by reviewing the contexts, interventions, terminologies, concepts, planning models, and sector involvement of water safety and drowning prevention to identify opportunities for multisectoral action. This is a fantastic article that will be of interest for everyone working in water safety - it advances the thinking around partnership and collaboration to prevent drowning.

A qualitative examination of causal factors and parent/caregiver experiences of non-fatal drowning-related hospitalisations of children aged 0–16 years

Authors: Awan, Wicks, & Peden; Published in PLOS One

Fatal and non-fatal drowning disproportionally affects children. Traditional quantitative analysis of drowning events are limited because often the situational factors are unknown across large datasets. This study used qualitative methods to identify causal factors in hospital treated cases of fatal and non-fatal drowning of children aged 0-16 in New South Wales, Australia. The researchers interviewed 86 parents or caregivers of children who experienced a drowning event and identified five important themes: lapse of supervision, unintended access (commonly in home swimming pools), brief immersion (usually young children bathing), falls into water and ongoing impacts. The others recommend several evidence-based prevention strategies and describe some of the challenges for drowning prevention focused on children and adolescents.
